Starting with CPMA

What is CPMA?

Challenge Promode Arena is a modification for id Software's Quake III Arena.

The mod has an extensive list of technical improvements such as netcode, bug fixes and many more but the main focus is creating a fast-pace gameplay.

CPMA gives more freedom to the player's movement and several weapon tweaks.

CPMA is played mostly on maps that are in the CPM map pack because these maps are found to be best suitable for the special gameplay.

Preparations

There's quite a lot of stuff you might / have to download in order to get started with CPMA. First of all, you need Quake 3. I assume you have at least pak0.pk3, which is the package file that came with Quake III Arena, contains pretty much all the game content such as textures, sound, models and is just about enough to get started.

Place pak0.pk3 in C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\baseq3\ (or just install Quake 3 if you have the whole game)

Downloads

  1. Point Release 1.32 This is the latest gamepatch by id Software
  2. 1.32c patch (optional)
  3. Challenge ProMode Arena 1.43 This is the latest version of the mod
  4. CPMA Map Collection The essential map pack of CPM suitable custom maps

Optional, but suggested

  1. Threewave map packs (for Capture the Flag and NTF game modes: q3wpak0.pk3, q3wpak1.pk3, q3wpak2.pk3, q3wpak3.pk3, q3wpak4.pk3
  2. TDM maps: OSPDM5a, nodm18
  3. ChallengeQ3 1.34 This is an improved Quake 3 executable and is strongly recommended

Getting things ready

This should be quite straight forward, so let's get a move on:

  1. Install Point Release 1.32 in C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\ (assuming you're following this guide) and the 1.32c patch (if you decided to get it) in the same place - do not bother with installing Punk Buster
  2. Unpack CPMA into C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\cpma\
  3. Unpack the CPMA Map Collection into C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\baseq3\
  4. Copy all the optional maps into C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\baseq3\
  5. Place the ChallengeQ3.exe in C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\cpma\

To play, either start up quake3.exe and load up CPMA from menu (Mods), or make a shortcut and direct it to "C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\quake3.exe" +set fs_game cpma, or, which is suggested, just use ChallengeQ3.exe

Customization

This should be more than enough for a solid start, but sooner or later you'll find out that you want to make some changes in your config (the file that contains your specific settings such as key bindings and visuals) and HUD. Here's some useful links:

Community

You should also become a part of our community in order to experience the best with CPMA.

  • Download and install mIRC, a chatclient and (optional) NoName Script - join all the other players on channels: #promode - general CPMA channel, #cpma.na - home of noobs anonymous, where you can get help at any time, #cpmpickup - for pickup games
  • Many CPMA related news is posted on ESReality (also a big archive of great CPMA movies).
